4 Signs Your Window Seals Have Failed

Seal failure in a window occurs when the inert gas between the panes of glass leaks out at a slow pace, allowing moisture to seep into the window assembly. When the seal of your window breaks down, it can cause all sorts of problems inside your home. To prevent these issues, make sure you keep an eye out for these signs of seal damage.

  1. Cold Drafts
When you stand near the window, do you feel uncomfortable drafts around the frame? If so, there is a big chance that a broken seal is causing air filtration in your living space. Drafts occur when cold air seeps through the window due to poor insulation or a faulty window seal.
  1. Excess Condensation
Take a close look at your window. Do you see cloudiness between the panes of glass? Fog or haze inside the glass is a sure sign that the seal has failed. Bear in mind, however, that a small amount of condensation on the surface of a window is normal and generally not a cause for concern. It is the moisture between the panes you should watch out for.
  1. Glass Distortion
When gas begins to seep out of the insulated glass unit, it alters the structural stability of the pane, causing it to bend slightly or sometimes even break. Distortion usually forms on the center of the glass.
  1. Insect Infestation
The presence of excess moisture brings unwanted pests, such as insects, into homes. If between the glass panes of your window you see small insects, take it as a sure indication that your window seal is broken.
