4 Tips for Spring-Cleaning Home Windows

A dry, cloudy day is the ideal time to spring-clean homes, including windows. Over time, road dirt, grime and pollution accumulate on your windows, blocking copious sunlight and spoiling the gorgeous outdoor view. Fortunately, with the spray, cloth and a little technique, you can keep your windows squeaky clean and your vista clear. A windows and hinged French doors expert shares these tips:

1. Remove dirt and dust first.

First off, sweep the buildup of dirt from the window frame using a brush or vacuum it up with the machine’s dusting attachment. This step will prevent traces of filth from creating a mud-caked mess when fused with the liquid cleaner. If the window screen is looking too grimy, pop it out and give it a quick wash with hot, foamy water and a gentle brush. Rinse and let dry before putting it back in place.

2. Pick the right cleaner.

Spritz generously — especially if your windows look extra grubby. Just like with expansive patio doors, you need a large amount of cleaning liquid to dissolve the dirt so it can be completely wiped away with a cloth or other tools. Using a cleaning solution in a bottle spray with fine mist means fewer drips and mess.

3. Use a microfiber cloth.

A reusable microfiber cloth is the best window cleaning aid out there, according to professionals. It is absorbent, washable and leaves the glass in a pristine, streak-free condition.

4. Divide the work.

It is recommended to clean windows at least once or twice a year. However, it is even less time-consuming to tackle if you opt to divide the job and do it room by room. Another good tip to remember is wiping one side of the window horizontally and the other surface vertically, so it is easier to know which side has leftover streaks.
