Spring is still a few months away, but you can start planning your home maintenance, like cleaning your windows, as early as now. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania shares good window maintenance habits to get into for this year.
1. Don’t mistake “low maintenance” for “no maintenance” — Low-maintenance windows have made it easy to keep windows looking good and operating flawlessly. However, homeowners often mistake “low maintenance” with “no maintenance,” leaving their windows neglected. Your low maintenance windows will still need to be cleaned at least once a year, and there’s never a better time to do so than during spring cleaning.
2. Always use new squeegees — Rubber becomes rigid and forms cracks as it ages. Using an old rubber squeegee on a window can permanently scratch the glass surface. Fortunately, replacement squeegee is cheap, easy to install, and can be found in most hardware and online stores. If you’re buying a new squeegee, choose one that’s at least a foot wide. It’s more efficient and lets you finish window cleaning faster.
3. Don’t let water dry on the glass — Make it a point to remove all the water from a window before moving on to the next one. Water droplets left on the glass surface can result in water spots, which, on ordinary glass, can be very difficult to remove. Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows come with High Performance™ Low-E4® glass that features a metal oxide coating, which helps remove up to 99% of water spots when activated by sunlight. Even with this feature, wiping your windows thoroughly is nevertheless a good habit to keep.
4. Use a microfiber cloth for wiping the windows — If you’ve been using paper towels, old newspapers, or discarded shirts for wiping windows, stop it. These materials are too rough and may have grit in them that could leave deep scratches on the glass. Old newspapers can also leave ink stains on the glass and frames. Instead, use microfiber cloth: they’re very absorbent, reusable, and do not retain anything that will scratch the glass.
