5 Design Ideas for Your Bay or Bow Windows

Bay and bow windows don’t just add character to a home from the outside. They also add functional extra space on the inside.

More than a few homeowners find this additional space (the “bay”, hence the name) challenging as it “interrupts” a room’s typically rectangular shape, so it’s usually relegated to being just additional seating, display space, hidden storage, or something to complement double hung windows in Harrisburg, PA. In some cases, only its inherent functions are utilized: additional natural lighting or ventilation.

Bay and bow windows can be so much more. With some planning and a little bit of design, you can turn what is essentially a small addition into something that’s simply essential.

  1. Curved seating. This works best on bow windows with a pronounced curve. You can either install seating along the window’s curve, or purchase a couch that roughly follows the same curve. Add a small circular coffee table and it’s a great spot for conversation with friends.
  2. Secondary bed. This is best for elongated rectangular bay windows in Harrisburg, PA. This can be used as additional day seating or as a spare bed, making it great for guests. The underside of the bay window can be used for storing spare pillows and blankets. For very small apartments, this could even function as the main bed to maximize space.
  3. Home office. For smaller bay windows, a single desk that sits flush with the entire bay would be perfect for a home office. Consider using a multi-sided desk on a larger bay or bow window. Whatever the desk shape is, ensure generous provisions for power outlets and good cable management. Consider installing shades on all replacement windows in Harrisburg, PA, to reduce screen glare.
  4. Bedroom breakfast nook. A small bay or bow window can work as a small breakfast nook in bedrooms – certainly a welcome change from the usual breakfasts in bed. You can either install a small coffee table or wheel a service table in as needed.
  5. Dining booth. An oversized bow window adjacent to or in the kitchen would be perfect for a dining booth. Just apply the earlier curved seating idea and add a dining table and appropriate lighting. Additional guests can simply add chairs as needed. This also works when you have limited space for a dining area.
