Mold and mildew can plague house walls and household items. Most homeowners have no idea how to deal with it or prevent it. It can show up on outdoor cushions, bathroom walls and curtains, towels and clothes, and walls. When mildew dries on surfaces, all of the spores get released and start floating in the air. This can be dangerous in your home because it can cause health problems.
Prevent It
• Leave the door open after a steamy shower to keep the moisture regulated.
• Mold grows in dark and damp places, run humidifiers in basements, closets and storage.
• Promote sunlight and air circulation in areas of your home.
Fix It
• Before you start working on your mold or mildew problem, protect yourself. Wear rubber gloves and a protection mask. Swallowing those pores can be very harmful to you.
• Always leave whatever cleaning solution you decide to use on the surface for at least 15 minutes. It is a fungus and the solution must soak into the fabric or surface.
• If you are working with outdoor cushions, clothes, towels, etc, let them totally dry out in the sun. It is a natural mold inhibitor.
• Once dry, use a brush to get rid of the loose spores. Always do this step outside.
• If the fabric is machine wash-able, soak it in your detergent of choice.
o Bleaching can help, but not all fabrics and colors are safe for bleaching. Always check labels before cleaning. Use full strength bleach.
o Baking soda and distilled vinegar is also a great detergent that is safe to use on any surface.
o Bleach can also be used on tile, sinks, walls, etc. But, if you do not want to work with bleach, 1 part Hydrogen peroxide and 2 parts water can be used also. You can use a spray bottle or brush to apply.
• The curtain liner is an easy clean. Put washing machine on gentle cycle, use hot water, bleach and detergent. You can also add a few towels to balance the load. Dry on low heat for a minute, until no longer dripping, then you can re-hang.
Last but not least, if there are large spots of mold and mildew in your kitchen, bathroom, basement or storage, do not hesitate to call a professional. This could be a sign of a larger problem that may eventually put you and your family’s health at risk.
