On Friday, August 12, a group of Renewal by Andersen employees made the trip to Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania with a very special delivery for the campers of Camp Can do.
An ice cream sundae bar and soft pretzels greeted the campers as they exited their afternoon activities. Renewal by Andersen staff helped serve the treats and interacted with the children. While nearly every child would be thrilled to be enjoying ice cream while at summer camp, these campers were especially happy – and there’s a good reason for that!
Camp Can Do serves children who have been diagnosed with cancer, and allows the kids to be themselves, have fun, and forget about their cancer diagnosis. During the week, campers enjoyed all the fun summer activities you would expect a child to be doing – swimming, hiking, games and more. But at Camp Can Do, these activities are anything but “normal,” they are a welcome distraction from the thoughts of cancer, treatments, hospitals and feeling sick. The kids are truly able to be kids for a week!
Best of all, Camp Can Do is a place where campers can find support and make friendships with other kids who are going through a similar experience. For once, they feel “normal” when it’s likely been a long time since they have felt that way.
Camp Can Do and Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation are wonderful resources in our community! Renewal by Andersen is honored to have the opportunity to support their efforts and to help give the kids something to smile about. And what better way to accomplish that than with a little bit of ice cream?
