What Is a Good SHGC Rating for Your Windows?

If you’re in the market for replacement windows, one key factor to consider is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) rating. Having a good understanding of what this rating means will help you make the best possible decision for your home.

What Is SHGC?

SHGC is a measurement of the amount of solar radiation that passes through a window. This measurement is used to help quantify the energy efficiency of your windows and is expressed by a number between 1 and 0. The closer the SHGC rating is to zero, the less heat is allowed through the window.

By knowing how a window behaves in relation to solar heat, you can make a more informed decision about whether it’s a good purchase for your home. For instance, if you live in a cold climate, you would probably like to choose windows that allow more solar heat to pass through as this will help keep your home warmer.

How are SHGC Ratings Determined?

SHGC ratings are determined by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The ratings are typically documented on labels affixed to the front or side of the product making them easy to see by consumers. If you are not sure what a good rating is for your specific situation, you can consult your local window installer.
