Wicker: Is It Wacky or Wonderful?

Wicker furniture can bring back memories of summertime at the seashore. But be careful—it can easily scream ’80s sun room gone wrong. Avoid a tacky room redo by embracing an updated version of the classic furniture material.

Wicker was first mass-produced in the United States in the 1800s. While its popularity hiccupped for a few decades in the early 1900s, wicker had a resurgence in the 1970s and remains a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor furniture.

Which Wicker Is for You?

Natural wicker is best suited for covered or indoor use since direct sunlight can dry out the fibers and cause the furniture to crack. Synthetic wicker has recently gained popularity because of its durability. Synthetic wicker is designed with a plastic-like material and can stand up to sun and rain.

Both types of wicker are available in a range of colors, styles and price points.

The key to keeping your wicker in style is embracing current trends. A fresh coat of spray paint can give new life to a flea market find. But DIYers shouldn’t go overboard; what works for a small accent chair might be overwhelming in a larger dose!

Add a Pop of Color

Decorators can play off pieces already in the space to tie in the bright wicker furniture. A wicker accent in bright teal, coral or yellow can add a fun pop to a sea of dark furniture.

Wicker accessories can add interesting texture to a space without committing to a whole living room suite. Homeowners should seek out end tables, bookcases and ottomans that can be painted to match a room’s theme.

And cushions are also a must for wicker seating. No one wants a woven pattern embedded in the back of their bare legs. Aside from being both comfortable and practical, cushion fabrics can easily be swapped out to stay on trend and keep wicker furniture looking fresh year after year.
