Your Home Layout: How It Affects Your Patio Door Selection

Choosing the right patio doors involves more than just selecting customization options that suit your home’s architectural style and your personal preferences. You also need to consider the layout of your home and your outdoor living space. Here’s why.

Doors Need Space to Open

Hinged doors open inward by default, and so they need some swing space. If the door is being installed in a large room with plenty of space, a hinged door is a good option. If the room is smaller or cluttered with furniture, you’d be better off with sliding doors.

Renewal by Andersen® hinged French doors are also offered in an out-swinging option to give you more latitude on your indoor home layout, although in this case you’ll need to consider the arrangement of your patio furniture. Sliding doors are a more forgiving option, yet they are more often associated with modern architecture. If you have a traditional home but want sliding doors, you can have the best of both worlds with our Frenchwood® sliding patio doors. These are sliding doors with a traditional rather than modern aesthetic.

Large, Sprawling Layouts Need More Natural Light

Bigger floor areas have bigger natural lighting requirements, so they require bigger patio doors (and windows) for illumination. Natural lighting presents several benefits, including energy savings from reduced use of artificial daytime lighting. It also has health benefits; it can improve your mood and make you more productive.
