According to Wikipedia, sustainability is the capacity to support, maintain or endure. No matter if you want to use the word in your everyday life or in the business world, it is something we all strive to be. Being able to support ourselves and each other, maintain our business year after year and mostly endure any hard times and rise above them.
This blog was originally written about sustainability in the business sense and how Renewal by Andersen has incorporated sustainability in every day operations. But, after the tragedy in NewTown, Conneticut, I did not feel it was right to talk about sustainability, without mentioning how we, as people, prove that we can sustain.
This country went through a terrible tragedy. I think it is fair to say that it hit all of us like a shockwave. We couldn’t tear ourselves away from the news reports while being horrified and disgusted by what we were hearing. For those of us who have children, no matter what age, we were thankful that we were able to hold them tight and mourned what those families were going through.
But, in the week following, we did not get over the grief we felt, but we were able to sustain. We supported those victims and heard stories of Victor Cruz, New York City Firefighters, Harley riders and many others who did their part to protect those families, honor them and support them. As a country, we have endured a lot and this is nothing short of one of the worst, but we will endure and sustain.
