Signs of Failing Window Seals

Windows are one of the most prominent features of any home, and taking care of them is crucial if you want your units to contribute positively to your home’s curb appeal and weather protection. This goes for all types of windows, from sliding to double hung windows. During maintenance, one of the things that you should check is your window seals.

In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania discusses what you need to know about window seals and seal failure.

The Purpose of Seals

Multi-pane windows contain two or three layers of glass. Between these panes of glass is an inert gas, usually argon or krypton, which acts as insulation and contributes to the energy efficiency of the windows.

Sealants are used to keep the gas trapped between the panes of glass. When properly maintained, multi-paned windows can help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If your window seals are failing, it can cause various issues in your home.

Signs of Condensation

Condensation can indicate the seals of your windows are failing. To check if you’re dealing with seal failure, thoroughly clean the surface of your windows, and make sure that any smudges or spots are removed from the glass. If you’re sure you’ve completely cleaned off everything on your window and there’s still some form of condensation on the glass, this could mean that the is moisture is inside your window and you have a broken seal.

Signs of Physical Distortion

Another way to check if your window has a failing seal is to look for physical distortion. Windows that are filled with argon or krypton tend to bow or warp in the middle when there’s a leak. You can clean both sides of your window, making sure that there is no dirt on both surfaces. Then, step away from the window and check your reflection. If your reflection appears more warped in that window compared to the other windows in your home, then the seal in that window could be damaged.
