Modern windows are designed to maximize how much natural light can shine into your home while also giving a nice view of the outdoors. But did you know that your windows also help boost your home’s energy efficiency? Quality windows can help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature as long as they’re properly cared for and maintained by trusted professionals. Experienced contractors know how to identify and address issues that can happen even during the winter season, such as fogging or even seal failure.
What should you do about foggy windows? As a local specialist in sliding windows and patio doors, Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania shares some insight below:
Older windows were typically built with just a single pane of glass housed by a wooden frame. These windows weren’t very durable because the glass panes tended to become loose within the frames. As such, they were very drafty and had poor energy efficiency.
Today, most residential windows today are sealed with either two or three panes of glass that create a partial vacuum in between them. The vacuum is filled with an inert gas such as krypton or argon. They can also be coated with a heat-reflective low-emissivity material depending on the homeowner’s preferences, which helps slow the heat transfer and retain comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year.
The seals on all our replacement windows are what keep the gas in the vacuum between the glass panes. These seals can fail due to natural wear and tear over the course of their lifespan. But if you had them installed recently or they’re only a couple of years old, the problem may lie with the product itself or how it was installed.
You can be certain that you have window seal failure if you notice mineral deposits, grime and dirt between the glass panes. This is impossible to clean on your own, and also a sign that the window needs to be replaced. Another sign is moisture buildup between the glass panes. If this issue isn’t addressed properly, the moisture can accumulate and cause window failure, along with mold and mildew growth.
