5 Signs Your Windows Were Poorly Installed

Windows and patio doors that were improperly installed can contribute to energy loss and negatively affect your home’s comfort. Also, your manufacturer may void your warranty if your window wasn’t installed properly by your contractor.

Here are signs of faulty window installation.

Gaps Between the Sill & Frame

A window that’s correctly measured should fit perfectly into the window opening. Gaps between the sill and frame indicate that the window wasn’t measured properly. Contact your window manufacturer and ask about their policies on product returns because of contractor error.

Hard to Operate

You shouldn’t have problems with opening windows or hinged French doors that were properly installed. If you are struggling with this, then faulty installation could be the cause. Contact your contractor right away if your windows won’t open and close properly after installation.

Drafts

Newly installed windows should not be drafty. There is something wrong with your new windows if you feel drafts coming from them. Inform your contractor immediately because the sooner you have the issue resolved, the more energy your home saves.

Water Damage

Poorly installed windows are prone to water damage. Rainwater can enter through the window, leaving behind stains on the walls beneath and around it. For wallpapered walls, you’ll see that the paper becomes yellow and wrinkled. Moisture can also cause painted walls to bubble and peel.

Uneven Caulking

Caulking seals and keeps your new windows in place. Messy caulking means that the installer didn’t have the patience to complete the job correctly. Proper caulking requires a steady hand, skills, and patience. Your windows will become less efficient if your contractor takes shortcuts.
