A Guide to Choosing the Right Window Size

When it comes to choosing the right window size for a room, there are plenty of factors to consider. Two of the most critical factors are the materials to be used and the window style that would best fit your home’s aesthetic. One other critical factor you have to think about is the size of the window. It helps, therefore, to know how to determine window size for a room.

Before you start looking for an ideal window solution for your home, you should learn basic things about the way of specifying the standard window sizes. Here are a few guidelines from patio doors and windows expert Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania.

  • Make sure that the sills are low enough so that you can see when you’re seated.
  • If the glass is too close to the floor, your window will require safety or tempered glass.
  • If your rooms have high ceilings, make the windows tall enough to make them look proportionate inside.
  • Make sure to leave enough space above the window for window curtain rods.
  • Choose the length and width of your window according to their proportion to other elements of your house, from the interior to the exterior.

Common Standard Window Sizes

  1. Double-Hung Window Sizes

Double-hung windows are the most common window types in homes across the country.  Since these windows are so popular, double-hung windows come in many different standard sizes.

  • Standard width: 24 to 48 inches (61 cm – 1.2 m)
    • Standard Height: 36 to 72 inches (0.9 – 1.8 m)
  1. Bay Window Sizes

The bay window is a type of projection window.  It contains one large, fixed window pane and two smaller side windows (flankers), placed at an angle of 30 or 45 degrees to the wall.

  • Standard width: 42 to 126 inches (1 – 3 m)
  • Standard Height: 36 to 78 inches (91 cm – 2 m)
  1. Sliding Window Sizes

As their name suggests, sliding contemporary doors and windows open back and forth on a track, making for an excellent style in a small space that requires easy ventilation, like above a kitchen sink or in a small bathroom.

  • Standard Width: 36 to 84 inches (91 cm – 2.1 m)
  • Standard Height: 24 to 60 inches (61 cm – 1.5 m)
  1. Picture Window Sizes

Big, broad, and beautiful, picture windows are ideal for rooms with a scenic view and lots of wall space.  They have a level of architectural appeal that other window types cannot match.

  • Standard Width: 24 to 96 inches (61 cm – 2.4 m)
  • Standard Height: 12 to 96 inches (30.5 cm – 2.4 m)
  1. Casement Window Sizes

The casement windows will provide full ventilation to your space from top to bottom. You will enjoy this model if you live in a warm region and depend on the breeze.

  • Standard Width: 14 to 35.5 inches (35.5 – 90 cm)
  • Standard Height: 29.5 to 77.5 inches (75 cm – 1.95 m)
