How Can Insulated Glass Help Improve Your Home’s Energy-Efficiency?

Insulated glass is a bit of misnomer—it’s actually made of two glass panes. The space between the panes is filled with an inert gas like argon or krypton to prevent heat transfer. These gases are colorless, odorless, and non-toxic, so you shouldn’t worry too much if the window sealing is damaged. Keep in mind that the leaking of theses gases significantly reduces the window’s energy efficiency, which is why you should replace them with new energy-efficient replacement windows as soon as possible.

What is Low-E Glass?

Low-E or low-emittance glass is a kind of glass that can reduce glare and completely block damaging ultraviolet rays. Renewal by Andersen offers a wide variety of energy-efficient glass options. Compared to a standard dual-pane window, a window equipped with High Performance Low-E4 glass is 70% more energy-efficient in summer and 45% more energy-efficient in winter.

What Does the ENERGY STAR® Label Mean?

Keep in mind that one or two features won’t make a window energy-efficient. Instead of focusing on the feature, you should evaluate window performance. One way of doing that is to check if the window has the ENERGY STAR® label. Only windows that have met the government-run program’s performance standards have this label. Underneath the label, you’ll find NFRC ratings that can tell you if a particular window is suited for your area and its climate and compare different ENERGY-STAR-certified windows.
