How Do You Prevent Your Windows From Freezing

When the colder months arrive, one of the first things you want to do is to cozy up and stay warm indoors. Many times, people fail to pay attention to parts of their homes that are vulnerable to damage due to freezing temperatures. While frost on your windows can be extremely damaging, there are different measures you can take to prevent them.

Read on for tips on how to keep your home’s windows from freezing.

What Causes Frost to Form on Windows?

Frost develops on your windows when they are exposed to warm air indoors and cold air outdoors. Water vapor or the moisture in the air indoors gravitates toward the windowpane, and when the outside surface temperatures go lower than the dew point, water vapor becomes liquid. When that liquid freezes it becomes ice crystals or frost.

You should be concerned about frost in your windows because once it defrosts, the moisture will travel to the frames of your windows. It can cause discoloration in the varnish and crack the varnish of your windows. When not addressed, frost can even damage the wooden components of your windows. If you have single-pane windows, moisture can seep into the wall and encourage mold growth.

How to Prevent Frost on Windows

With regular care, you can delay the need for getting new replacement windows. Make sure that your windows have no leaks and gaps. If there are leaks, have them sealed immediately. When you are cooking or showering, your exhaust fans should be on.

If you have old single-pane windows, consider investing in windows with multiple panes. These windows have gas fills in between panes, which helps improve their insulative properties. They will help improve your indoor comfort and reduce your energy bills.
