Your windows are at risk of sustaining damage during strong summer storms. In this blog, Renewal by Andersen® of Central Pennsylvania shares a short guide on how to inspect your windows after a summer storm.
Check Surrounding Areas for Hazards
Before you begin your window inspection, make sure the weather is clear. Check the immediate surroundings and make sure nothing is blocking the exits. Assess the curb and look out for flooding, downed power lines and fallen trees. If you see live wires, call 911 and stay indoors until the area is declared safe.
Check Your Windows for Damage
During window inspection, there are three kinds of damage that you should pay attention to:
-
Wind Damage — Extreme wind speeds can damage windows even if there’s no windborne debris. Before you sweep the shattered glass away, make sure you take pictures and document the damage. Your insurance provider will need this documentation when processing your insurance claim for replacement windows.
-
Impact Damage — Storm winds are strong enough to carry debris and hurtle it through your windows, though sometimes the damage can be more subtle. Check the windows for cracks, as well as dents in the frames and trim.
-
Water Damage — Wind can force water through the weathertrsipping on your windows. If your windows are equipped by double-pane glazing, keep an eye out for condensation between the glass panels. This indicates a broken seal, which requires urgent repair or replacement. Check the areas around the windows for other signs of water damage, such as water stains, swollen wood parts and sagging floorboards.
After Inspection
After making sure your family is safe and has shelter, contact your insurance provider and your replacement window contractor, and, if your roof has sustained storm damage, your roofing contractor. Your insurance provider will need documentation of the damage and a written estimate of the repair costs for your insurance claim. The sooner these requirements are completed, the faster your claim will be processed.
